How Cracked concrete Influence Anchor Design
The Structural Engineering community specifies Post-installed anchors with either mechanical or adhesive system in many construction applications. The condition of base material will play a key role in selecting the type of anchor to be used.
Concrete base material is classified as either cracked or un-cracked. It is not possible for a reinforced concrete structure to be built without having cracks under working conditions, provided that they do not exceed a certain width limit, however it is not always necessary to regard cracks as defects in a structure. Concrete can often crack due to age, temperature variations or loads. Research and tests showed that cracks will run through these weak points where anchor exists and will influence anchor behavior and performance therefore only specific anchors are qualified to work in cracked concrete.
Accordingly, before designing anchor systems for concrete, it’s always important to consider the condition of the concrete you’re working with.

Design Principles According to Eurocode2 Provisions
Reinforcement anchorages or splices that are fixed into an existing concrete structure by injection adhesive in drilled holes are defined as “Post-Installed rebar connections”.
Post Installed rebar connections are commonly used in a wide range of applications, which vary from new construction projects, to structure upgrades and infrastructure requalification.
So, when you need to extend, join or strengthen existing concrete walls, slabs, columns or beams, then adhesive mortars for post-installed rebar can help, however, post installed rebar must be designed as carefully as the entire structure.
While the European technical approvals prove that in standard load situations and applications, post installed rebars behave like cast-in bars, a number of differences needs to be considered in special design situations such as fire, or load cases where hooks or bends would be required for cast in anchorages such as the case for rigid connections.

Introduction To Anchor Design Software
Concrete anchors are widely used in fastening both structural and non-structural elements.
Many structural engineers specify post-installed anchors where they design different fastening points with either mechanical or adhesive anchor system in many construction applications.These elements fastened are somehow directly or indirectly linked to the safety of human being or different economic investments.
There are different factors which could influence anchor design such as installation parameters, anchor layout, loading conditions and other special requirements related to seismic or fire design etc. and it is the responsibility of the structural engineer to ensure that anchor fastener shall sustain all load actions during execution and it will remain fit for use under different environmental and loading conditions.
